Houston-Area Families Mourn Losses in Central Texas Floods

Tragic Flooding Claims Lives of Local Residents and Campers

Houston-area families are grappling with profound grief following the catastrophic flash floods that struck Central Texas over the Fourth of July weekend.

The deluge, which began on July 4, led to at least 135 fatalities across the region, with Kerr County bearing the brunt of the disaster.

Among the hardest-hit locations was Camp Mystic, a cherished all-girls summer camp along the Guadalupe River, where at least 27 campers and counselors lost their lives.

Several victims hailed from the Houston area, leaving the community in mourning.

Greta Toranzo, a 10-year-old student at Sinclair Elementary School in Houston, was among those who perished at Camp Mystic.

Her family confirmed her passing, expressing their heartbreak over the loss of her bright spirit and loving heart.

In her honor, more than 150 people gathered for a candlelight vigil outside her school, clad in her favorite color, blue, and singing hymns to commemorate her life.

Chloe Childress, an 18-year-old counselor at Camp Mystic and recent graduate of The Kinkaid School in Houston, also lost her life in the floods.

School officials remembered her for her remarkable ability to make people feel seen and her steady compassion that settled a room.

Kellyanne Lytal, daughter of Wade Lytal, a former Memorial High School football player and current offensive coordinator at Trinity University in San Antonio, was confirmed dead after being reported missing from Camp Mystic.

Her family described her as a shining light in this world, known for her kindness and fearless spirit.

Reese Manchaca, a recent graduate of Caney Creek High School in Conroe, was found deceased after being reported missing during a camping trip near Hunt.

Teachers remembered her as a self-confident and fun young woman who lit up every room she entered.

The tragedy has prompted state officials to scrutinize emergency preparedness and response measures.

Governor Greg Abbott has expanded the agenda of a special legislative session to include flood response and disaster preparedness, aiming to prevent such devastating losses in the future.

As the community mourns, the resilience and unity of Houston-area residents shine through, honoring the memories of those lost and supporting the families affected by this heartbreaking disaster.
